چکیده

This work consists in a dynamic voltage scaling methodology, with Fault-Tolerance capability, to be used during circuits’ lifetime operation. Methodology implements on-line circuit monitoring, restricting power consumption by adjusting dynamically the power-supply voltage to the minimum value that prevent errors. Error free operation is achieved by using a cooperative work of global and local sensors, sensitive to PVT and Aging (namely, Bias Temperature Instability effects), and by adding an additional fault-tolerance margin to improve error avoidance. Spice simulations in a 65nm CMOS technology demonstrate the results for an example of a dynamic voltage scaling strategy. Keywords—Dynamic voltage scaling; Fault-Tolerance; Performance sensors; PVTA variations; Bias Temperature

Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling for Long-Term and Fail-Safe Operation

This paper presents a dynamic voltage and frequency scaling methodology for long-term operation, using fault-tolerance to prevent failures. The DVFS methodology allows a dual-mode operation, targeting high performance or low-power operation modes, and using an on-line circuit monitoring with aging-aware fault-tolerance to prevent errors during a long-term operation. Fail-safe operation is achie...

Energy-Aware Fault Tolerance in Hard Real- Time Embedded Systems

Energy consumption of electronic devices has become a serious concern in recent years. Energy efficiency is necessary to lengthen the battery lifetime in portable systems, as well as to reduce the operational costs and the environmental impact of stationary systems. Dynamic power management (DPM) algorithms aim to reduce the energy consumption at the system level by selectively placing componen...

Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling algorithm for fault-tolerant real-time systems

Many modern real-time systems (RTSs) are required to provide both fault tolerance and energy-efficiency in addition to their main objective to compute and deliver correct results within a specified period of time. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) technique is known as one of the most effective low-energy technique for RTSs. However, most existing DVFS techniques only focus on minimi...

Low-power Methodology for Fault Tolerant Nanoscale Memory Design

Low-Power Methodology for Fault Tolerant Nanoscale Memory Design by Seokjoong Kim Millions of mobile devices are being activated and used every single day. For such devices, energy efficient operation is very important; low-power operation enables not only long battery time but also improves energy efficiency of the servers that communicate with the mobile devices. However, reduced noise margin...

Using a Flexible Fault-Tolerant Cache (FFT-Cache) to Improve Reliability in Ultra Low Voltage Operation

Caches are known to consume a large part of total microprocessor power. Traditionally, voltage scaling has been used to reduce both dynamic and leakage power in caches. However, aggressive voltage reduction causes process-variation-induced failures in cache SRAM arrays, which compromise cache reliability. In this paper, we propose Flexible Fault-Tolerant Cache (FFT-Cache) that uses a flexible d...
